A fan speed controller lets a fan run at the airflow the room needs instead of flat out. This page holds twelve single-phase controls: electronic speed controllers from 1 A to 10 A, two- and three-speed selector switches, and a humidistat with timer.

Fan speed controllers & switches12 productsWhich control does your fan need?
Start with the fan, not with the control. Read two things on the fan's rating plate: the rated current in amps, and the motor type. The motor type decides the kind of control. The current decides its size.
| Your fan | Control to use | In this range |
|---|---|---|
| Single-speed AC motor, marked speed-controllable | Electronic speed controller | 1 A, 2.5 A, 5 A, 10 A |
| Two or three fixed speeds | Speed selector switch | 2-speed and 3-speed, up to 4 A |
| EC motor | Controller for EC fans | One model, with remote control input |
| Any fan that should react to moisture | Humidistat with timer | One model, up to 6 A |
Electronic speed controllers
Seven controllers with smooth speed adjustment by a rotary knob. Every one has on/off switching and a minimum-speed setting, so the fan cannot be turned down to a point where the motor stalls.
Choose the rating above the fan's rated current, never below it. The 1 A and 2.5 A sizes come in two versions: flush-mounted for a standard in-wall box, and surface-mounted with their own wall box. The 5 A and 10 A sizes are surface-mounted. Surface-mounted versions are rated IP44, and the 10 A size is IP54.
Speed selector switches
Four switches for fans built with two or three fixed speeds. The switch does not vary the voltage. It selects one of the speeds the motor already has, and turns the fan on and off. Two models are two-speed and two are three-speed.
Humidistat with timer
One wall-mounted humidistat for a fan that has no sensor of its own. It starts the fan when relative humidity passes the set point, adjustable from 60 to 90 %, and the timer keeps the fan running after the level has dropped. Fans with the sensor already built in are on the extractor fans with humidistat page.
Common questions
What size fan speed controller do I need?
Take the rated current from the fan's rating plate and choose the next controller size above it. A fan drawing 0.4 A takes the 1 A controller. A fan drawing 1.8 A takes the 2.5 A controller.
Can any fan be speed controlled?
No. The fan must be marked as speed-controllable by the manufacturer. A fan with fixed speeds takes a selector switch, and a fan with an EC motor takes the controller made for EC fans.
Can one controller run two fans?
Yes, when both fans are the same type and their rated currents added together stay below the controller rating. Both fans then run at the same speed.
Is a fan speed controller worth it?
It is when the fan is sized for the worst case. An in-line fan chosen for a full kitchen or a long duct run is louder than needed most of the day. Turned down, it moves less air, makes less noise and uses less power.
